  The Book

Molly Moon is no ordinary orphan. When she finds a mysterious old book on hypnotism, she discovers she can make people do whatever she wants. But a sinister stranger is watching her every move and he'll do anything to steal her hypnotic secret.

Welcome Back!!

In this course we need to develop our ability to read a varitey of texts for a variety of purposes, write for a variety of purposes and solve problems.

We'll do this by starting our own little company (working name "Leaside Digital Arts") that focuses on a book that's about to be turned int a movie (movie talk: "hot property"). Leaside Arts' job will be to support the release of the new movie and the book (when a book like this is released as a movie, the book acquires a sort of second life: kids want to read it...so the book becomes a "hot commodity") with support items like cool games, release ads etc. The idea behind this project is to read/and understand a good book and then work together to create interesting products that support the book.

This semester's book is one that's due to be released maybe late this year (they have shot the movie, but haven't finished the post production or announced a release date). The book is Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism. ...blurb above.

Here are some links for the book/movie:

  1. Movie Production Company Page
  2. Wikipedia Entry (outlines the book...spoiler alert)
  3. Publishers' page
  4. Toronto Public Library (has digital copies and Book on Tape version if you need assistance)

Our first task (of course) is to get the book read and not just to gloss over the surface of what's going on. As always I want you to read closely. At the same time though, we'll start establishing how books are different relative to games, and then how to make a good book into a good game.

So that's the plan. We better get started.
